england in film

so i brought a bunch of color film to london, but for some strange reason it was left forgotten in the bottom of my suitcase until i fished it out a couple weeks ago. (also on that note i am tragically behind on blog posts about my semester/spring break extravaganza/and day trips woooops). the following photos were extracted from three rolls taken on an afternoon in greenwich village (in london), a spontaneous day trip to new forest national park in southampton, and a day trip to brighton.

bon voyage?

our flight didn't happen yesterday. i woke up to a snow storm raging outside and little red letters: cancelled. after an initial freak out and a very helpful british man from the virgin atlantic customer service department - our flight was moved 24 hours into the future. facebook is a weird things, and one of the weird things is seeing all everyone arrive in london this morning (if things went according to plan ashley and i would be there right now) while i'm still a world away. regardless, we will be on the plane tonight and get there bright and early thursday morning.

don't get me wrong, i'm beyond excited and thrilled to be living in london for the next four months - but some part of me wanted to go somewhere far away where i would simply just fall off the earth for a little bit. nyu london is very tied into my life at nyu and my life in new jersey (with seemingly everyone i know studying abroad there) which is not a bad thing! it's just strange to see so many connections to home - a place i sort of don't want connections too.

i met megan breukelman the other day when i was in the city! we had known each other for years from deviantart and i was wonderful to finally meet in da flesh. i took a handful of medium format shots but most of them turned out blurry because i, despite what i may think, do not have the stability of a tripod. the last two photos were just files of francesca and my home that were from failed rolls.




now, i am off to spend a ludicrous amount of money on a moleskine because i don't care if they're overrated they are beautiful and make me happy.

tyler in medium format

the night before tyler left for rhode island left we decided to wake up at sunrise the next morning to shoot some medium format only to wake up to gray on gray clouds. checking the weather probably would have been intelligent.

this is the first roll of color film i've shot with medium format - i shot it with kodak portra 400 with a mamiya 7 i borrowed from school. i keep forgetting that viewfinders don't show you how the actual photo looks like, so it's a different photographing experience and i was left unsure on how the photos would turn out. i'm getting the hang of it and i really love it. i like how the mamiya 7 has a light meter built in, but for the love of god i'm terrible at focusing. medium format has it's pros and cons - pros being the beautiful negative and colors and overall feeling but it doesn't have the fast snapshot feel that 35mm has that i love.

oh yes, and i forgot to set the camera to 120 film and it was set on 220 - so three photographs i ended up loving were obviously cut off. a+ julia, a+. and i apologize about photobucket's icky quality.

i had a lot of t-max 100 film sitting around so i thought i would shoot it. i did the settings all based off a light meter and reveled in my failure. i love shooting in 35mm and printing in the darkroom - but due to lack of time/probably laziness i just scanned them. (plz excuse my dirty negatives lol)

these are more of lighting tests - than anything. the first roll was of ashley and sophia // second roll was tess and bella.

some film photos i have in my files i took earlier this summer. it's july already, what? the photos with the dates on the bottom corner are from a test shoot from an old point and shoot film camera a family friend graciously gave me. and they're underexposed loL MY B w/E. and some photos from school are sprinkled in there~

how is it that you can get decent DOF/bokeh on a point and shoot in film but not digital?

last night of the semester

i was experimenting with my flash and 200 color film, and i loved the results. today was the last day for me (i didn't move out until a few days later, but ya know). we had our final show in the morning and then we were done, it's just so weird that....i'm done. what? here i wrote a lil existential/not really blurb on the night before i moved out ~le tumblr~

it’s finally over and it just feels weird. i swear to god just yesterday i was listening to the heavy plastic bins rolling against the gravel as we tried to frantically move and settle in into a completely new environment.

as the year went on i stuck more things on my wall, added more miscellaneous pieces of paper into my drawers, and filled my shelf up with trinkets i stumbled up and with lots of negatives of things i saw that i probably should have put in a protective negative sleeve.

it was strange when i first accidentally called my dorm room “home” because home was in new jersey with my family and my dog. but this was home too. my warm teal sheets the color of the summer sky and my paisley printed blankets i wrapped myself in during cold nights. the stupidly small kitchen stocked full of mugs and food because we love to cook. and the common room with our old christmas stockings still on the wall because we never had the heart to take it down.

at first it was denial that this year would be over, i expected myself to say “see you next week” and rush home to finish work so i could go out and explore for the weekend. some of my photo family met up that night and talked while i snapped a bunch of shots with my film camera and we hugged goodbye afterwards and it just felt weird and wrong that i wasn’t going to be seeing them for such a long time.

now that so many people have left the dorm is awkwardly empty and the walls are bare and white and look like no one has ever been here. pieces of tape and paper i stuck up are gone as am i. my room mate has left and it feels so strange that once you take the sheets of the mattress the room is officially no longer yours and it’s just an empty template waiting for the next person.

it feels weird because this place has become my home and it sounds cliche as fuck but i really am a different person than i was a year ago and this place is a part of it. i’m so excited for the coming semester and school year but a part of me wants to rewind the clock so i can spend one more week in 504 south waking up on a rainy sunday morning and listening to the excess of police sirens blaring down third avenue.

let's not get to sentimental here, but it was honestly a great year full of amazing people.

coney island in film

yay i finally developed and scanned my film! this was from my first trip to coney island with some photo friends. :) i have a lot of pictures to upload, i'll get around to it eventually. back in early march when it was still empty and cold. i apologize for the terrible scan quality.

adventures in analog II

some more of my homework over the past few weeks :3 i've printed more photos than this but i've only scanned my favorites.

first batch are of my friend morgan from a collab we did with studio lights and medium format. the second batch was taken with 3200asa film for my final project: nightmares. and the last is from the freak one day snow storm we had a few days ago. my homework involved flash so i experimented with different methods with ashley on 100asa film.

adventures in analog

what's up? i have a blog post with my september adventures coming soon, but since i just scanned some prints and i have a half hour before class - why not make a blog post?

so i'm taking an analog class first semester and i love it so far. developing film isn't that difficult, just incredibly stressful sometimes because there is the looming possibility the negatives don't come out nicely. but i haven't had any issues yet? (knock on wood). we're working with black and white film, so it's different but fun for me - since my work is very color based. and for a film virgin, i have to say i think i'm doing quite all right IF I SAY SO MYSELF. (nah, it's just that because i have no prior knowledge to "confuse" me it's easier to pick up.) i love spending late nights in the darkroom by myself, it's therapeutic and fun. :3 i'll scan and upload some contact sheets later! (i'll just add it to this blog post.)

all o' dese photos are taken with my canon a-e 1 and my 50mm 1.8. it's 35mm and so far, only shot with 400ASA film. i want to get my hands on some 3200ASA film yup.
